Egyptians mainly came from the Mediterranean area as farmers. They settled along the Nile because of its rich soil. To control the wild Nile River they needed the direction of a government. This is what lead up to Menes uniting Upper and Lower Egypt, and the beginning of the Old Kingdom. After the uniting of Egypt many religious ideas began to form. Egypt developed one of the first religions to believe in life after death. This is why pyramids and temples were made, to give a place for the dead to live.

  • Temples
    • Egyptians believed temples were homes for the gods. They dedicated a temple to each individual god.
    • They also served as a place of worship for priests and pharaohs.
    • Temple walls were covered in scenes. The scenes were carved in stone and painted, showing religious ceremonies.
    • In the front of each temple stood two facades and two obelisks. The front of the temple is called a pylon.
    • An obelisk is a very simple, spear shaped momument to the gods.
