  • The time periods of Ancient Egypt are mainly broken down into three sections.
    • The Old Kingdom (2575 BC - 2130 BC)
    • The Middle Kingdom (1938 BC - 1630 BC)
    • The New Kingdom (1539 BC - 1075 BC)
  • The old Kingdom, by most, is considered the beginning of Ancient Egypt as a civilization.

    • 3100-2575 BC
      • Menes, King of Upper Egypt, unites Lower and Upper Egypt.
      • Earliest forms of hieroglyphic writings made.
      • Capital city Memphis created.
      • The first pyramid, the Step Pyramid at Saqqara, is created.
    • 2575-1975 BC
      • In Giza the Great Pyramid is created.
      • Pyramids first start seeing inscriptions.
      • Egypt becomes two seperate states. Memphis ruled the north and Thebes ruled the south.
    • 1975-1640 BC
      • This period is known as the Middle Kingdom.
      • It was the era of classical literature and the arts.
      • Mentuhotep reunited Egypt during this time period.
      • Under the rule of Senwosret I and III egypt conqured most of Lower Nubia.
      • Amenemhat I, finds new royal resident loaction in Memphis.
    • 1630- 1520 BC
      • Power seized in the North under the rule of Hyksos kings.
      • The seventeenth dynasty is founded under Theban in the south.
    • 1520-1075 BC
      • This was period known as the New Kingdom.
      • First women pharaoh, Hatsheput, becomes the ruler over Egpyt.
        • Shortly after her death her step-son Tuthmosis III, attempted to erase her name from history. He nearly destroyed her legacy.
      • The very elaborate Valley of the Kings tombs were also created.
      • Ramesses II, also ruled over ancient Egypt for sixty seven years during this time.
    • 1075-332 BC
      • Nubians began to conquer Egypt towards the end of this period.
      • Also known as the Late Period.
      • Egypt was conquered for a short time  by Assyrians during this time.
      • Many cultural changes took place.
      • Persian armies conquered Egypt around 525 BC.
      • Egypt became independent again around 375 BC.
    • 332 BC-395 AD
      • This period is known as the Roman Period.
      • Alexander the Great invades and takes control of Egypt.
      • Ptolemy, one of Alexander's generals, finds a dynasty and becomes the king of it.
      • The Rosetta Stone is carved in 195 BC
      • Cleopatra VII (the seventh) reigns over Egypt during 51 BC to 30 BC.
      • The Roman Empire makes Egypt one of its many provinces in 30 BC.
